Experts Warn TEOs Could Bar Australians Abroad Indefinitely
Experts warn that Australia's Temporary Exclusion Orders (TEOs), enacted in 2019, could indefinitely prevent citizens overseas from returning home. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirms a TEO against one of 11 Australian women trying to leave Syria's al-Roj camp, blocking her entry for up to two years. The law allows the minister to issue orders against citizens aged 14 and older deemed security threats, with no limit on consecutive renewals.
