Japan triples its international departure tax starting July 2026, raising it from around ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per traveler, regardless of nationality. This uniform fee, embedded in airline or ship tickets, funds tourism infrastructure and combats overtourism affecting residents and visitors alike. Kyoto introduces Japan's highest accommodation tax from March 1, 2026, with rates up to ¥10,000 per night for luxury stays to preserve heritage sites and enhance public transport.
